KASTEEL

An independent, Belgian, short film production.

Première 07/06/2025 - 15:00 CC De Meent

Gemeenveldstraat 34, 1652 Beersel

PLOT

In this romantic-thriller short film, Anika (Annick Van Couwenberghe) and Jade (Maud Arts) play out their duplicated roles in the opportunistic love story of Henk (Nicolas van Heuven). Coincidentally, both women uncover their own dynamic with each other with neither of them revealing the whole truth. Caught in the double-talk of his own script, Henk will be forced to choose. Will he remember?

A Belgian independent short film produced by (c) Irina du Plessis.

Back story

The trilingual (Dutch-French-English) script for this short film was initially inspired by a walk in Schavey Park, Linkebeek. To bring the story to life, other sources of inspiration were added. In a brief interview, Steven Spielberg replied nonchalantly that all you need to make a film today is a smartphone. So I took up the challenge. Later, I stumbled across a song on Yves Hansquine's Facebook profile (there's an interesting little story there too). The song was called 'Painkiller'. It was written and sung by the lead singer Harry Verleysen (who died during the covid period) from the blues/rock band Orange Blues (in Brussels). Painkiller was a special song, written from the heart and linked to a sad family story. So it was the final inspiration for me to bring my own story to the screen. So I set up a collaboration with the other members of Orange Blues and, together, we brought an old concept back to life. We, therefore recorded a brand new song for the film.

From the old to the new and from the past to the present! There are a lot of sentimental links this project called KASTEEL. Why did I shoot at the Castle of Beersel? Why the Cult Café? Why in Alsemberg nature reserve? In short, because there's no better place to develop, expand and share art than right here at home: Beersel!

As far as the film's cast (and crew) are concerned, there are also several interesting stories. Finding multilingual actors was a difficult and time-consuming task, but to avoid unveiling the mystery, I'll just say this: almost all the actors are local or from our neighbouring towns. Only one actress is from the Netherlands. They are all multilingual, but with emphasis on Dutch as a language of art. And that's All Folks !

The last piece of technical advice I received from my father (who died of cancer in 2024) concerned the number of lumens I would need to film in the darkest of nights with such basic equipment. He was, among other things, an expert in research and development in illumination.

It is also in his honour that I am presenting this project.

The storyline of KASTEEL originated two years ago and was completed in early 2025. Steven Spielberg once said in a brief interview: 'Anyone can make a film these days! All you need is a smartphone!'

I decided to take up that challenge. This short film celebrates the simplicity of cinema, the cultural and linguistic heritage of my town over the past 10 years, Beersel, but also the hidden gems of acting talent that often don't get enough recognition!

In memory of my father. My mentor and my muse! Stelian Matei

TRIVIA

Facts and fiction about the short film KASTEEL. From concept to creation:

Oh! What's in a NAME ?

EVERYTHING!

  • The name KASTEEL comes from one of the 3 scenes shot in Beersel Castle, located on the outskirts of Brussels, in the beautiful Flemish-Brabant town of Beersel.
  • The film is also inspired by the idea of The Castle, a book by Franz Kafka. The idea of many doors leading nowhere, or worse, back to the beginning, when it comes to emotion, desire and executive actions that sometimes lead to irreversible consequences.

But what is the story actually about ?

Henk, Anika and Jade are our 3 main characters. The film explores the interactions between these characters, but never all at once until the very end. There is premeditation, deceit, love, tension and an unconventional sexual dynamic in each of their respective relationships. Each of their choices leads to irreversible consequences.

The challenge ?

Making a short film of about 15-20 minutes, with the most rudimentary equipment available for maximum quality. Was Steven Spielberg right? Is a smartphone all you need?
